When it comes to capturing images that stop the scrollers online and make international competition judges stop and stare, nature and travel photographers know that the right combination of skill, subject, and setting is key. This is not just about taking good photographs—it’s about creating visuals that evoke awe, wonder, and emotion in viewers. It’s about transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary by taking deliberate steps to enhance your craft and seek out breathtaking, unique locations. In this article, we’ll explore strategies to improve your photography results, dive into why subject selection is crucial, and discuss the unparalleled benefits of travelling to exotic locations with professional instructors and local guides.

The Importance of Subject Selection in Nature Photography

Let’s face it: the subject of a photograph can make or break the image. A compelling subject not only grabs attention but also keeps the viewer engaged. As photographers, our job is to create visual narratives that resonate on a deeper level. This is particularly true for nature and travel photography, where the subject is often the star of the show.

Think about the photographs featured in National Geographic—they’re iconic not only because of the photographers’ skills but also because of their unique and rare subjects. Whether it’s the soft, glowing rice terraces of a Vietnamese rural sunset or a Humpback whale frolicking in its natural habitat, these images succeed because they feature something extraordinary, something that most people may never see in a lifetime.

Here’s the secret: the greatest subjects are rarely found in your own backyard. Sure, local photography can be beautiful, but to truly wow viewers and judges, it’s essential to step off the beaten path and explore exotic destinations. This is where the magic happens. Places like the dramatic landscapes of the Utah Badlands, the mystical monasteries of Europe, or the iconic fells of Iceland offer an abundance of subjects that are both visually striking and culturally rich.

Why Exotic Destinations Offer Unique Opportunities

Travelling to exotic destinations not only immerses you in breathtaking scenery but also exposes you to subjects and perspectives you wouldn’t otherwise encounter.

From the sandstone canyons of the American Southwest to the Wreck of the Governoren, Antarctica, or the incense factories of Hanoi, these locations are brimming with opportunities to capture rare unforgettable moments.

Take, for example, this award-winning photograph, Sunrise on La Pan Tan. This image, captured during a photography tour in North Vietnam, combines dramatic light, vibrant colours, and an intricate composition to tell a story of harmony between Man and Mother Nature to thrive from each other that’s both captivating and unique. Achieving this level of impact requires not just technical expertise but also the ability to recognize a powerful subject in an extraordinary setting.

When you venture to these far-flung locations, you’re opening yourself up to new cultural experiences, diverse wildlife, and striking landscapes that aren’t easily replicated elsewhere. These factors collectively elevate your portfolio and help you stand out in the competitive world of photography.

The Value of Professional Guidance

One of the most effective ways to improve your photography is by travelling with professional instructors and local guides. Here’s why this approach is transformative:

• Targeted Expertise: Professional photographers bring years of experience to the table. They’ll teach you advanced techniques, like mastering light and composition, that you can immediately apply to your work.

• Access to Hidden Gems: Local guides know the best-kept secrets of their regions. They’ll take you to off-the-beaten-path locations that aren’t crowded with tourists, allowing you to capture truly unique images.

• Efficient Learning: With a professional by your side, you can dramatically accelerate your learning curve. What might take months or years to figure out on your own can be mastered in just a few days.

• Networking and Inspiration: Being part of a group of like-minded photographers fosters collaboration and creativity. You’ll gain inspiration not only from the instructors but also from your peers.

Practical Tips for Creating WOW-Worthy Photos

To create images that stand out, keep the following tips in mind:

• Pre-Visualize Your Shots: Before you press the shutter, imagine how the final image will look. Consider the composition, lighting, and emotional impact.

• Master Light and Composition: Pay attention to the golden hours of sunrise and sunset, and use leading lines, symmetry, and framing to guide the viewer’s eye.

• Tell a Story: A great photograph should evoke emotion or curiosity. Think about the story you want your image to convey and how your subject fits into that narrative.

• Experiment with Perspectives: Don’t settle for a single angle. Explore high, low, and unconventional perspectives to add depth and interest to your images.

• Invest in the Right Gear: While skill outweighs equipment, having the right tools can make a big difference. For travel and nature photography, I’m a Nikon photographer so I typically carry both Z 8 and Z 9 camera bodies along with lenses from 14-24mm f/2.8, 24-70mm f/2.8, 24-120mm f/4 and a 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 for everything from low-light & wide-angle versatility to telephoto for wildlife and more intimate landscape subjects. I also bring a drone wherever permissible. It provides an invaluable range of perspectives you can’t capture from the ground.
